The Major Atlantic Shipping Basins

Where to go sailing on the Atlantic Coast?

The Atlantic coast offers a wide variety of sailing areas, including large bays, islands, straits, estuaries, and long stretches of coastline opening up to the ocean. Depending on your port of departure, your itinerary, and your sailing preferences, Liberty Pass allows you to explore several iconic areas, from La Baule Bay to the Basque Country.

01
North Atlantic

From La Baule to Les Sables-d'Olonne

Located between La Baule Bay and the Vendée coast, this area offers numerous opportunities for coastal sailing. From Pornichet or Le Pouliguen, you can enjoy the bay, sail along the Côte d’Amour, and head toward the Guérande Peninsula. Further south, Les Sables-d’Olonne serves as an excellent base for exploring the Vendée coast and heading to destinations such as Île d’Yeu. This area is ideal for both day trips and longer voyages.

02
Charente-Maritime

La Rochelle and the Charente Islands

The La Rochelle area is one of the most iconic sailing regions on the Atlantic coast. From La Rochelle or Île d’Oléron, recreational boaters can sail between Île de Ré, Île d’Aix, Oléron, and the famous Fort Boyard. The Charente Straits offer a wide variety of activities, including coastal cruising, anchorage spots, exploring the islands, and day trips. Further south, Royan also provides the opportunity to enjoy the Gironde Estuary and expand your cruising range to the Charente coast.

03
Gironde

Arcachon Bay and Cap Ferret

The Arcachon Basin offers a sailing experience quite different from the rest of the Atlantic coast. From Arcachon or Cap Ferret, you can sail among the oyster-farming villages, Île aux Oiseaux, the stilt huts, and the many sandbars in the basin. The channels then allow you to reach the ocean for more challenging outings when conditions permit. This area is particularly popular for its diverse landscapes and range of boating options.

04
South Atlantic

Basque Coast and Hendaye

At the southern tip of the Atlantic coast, Hendaye offers an ideal starting point for exploring the Basque coast from the sea. The sheltered bay makes it easy to enjoy coastal outings, while boaters can head to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, cruise along the Basque cliffs, or sail toward the Spanish coast. This sailing area is very different from those further north, characterized by its rugged terrain, wide beaches, and direct access to the Atlantic Ocean.

You can find boats in locations such as: Pornichet, Le Pouliguen, Les Sables-d'Olonne, La Rochelle, Île d'Oléron, Arcachon, Cap Ferret, and Hendaye. The boats available and their availability vary by port.

02 How much does a boat membership cost on the Atlantic Coast?

The rate includes, among other things, the boat, its dock space, maintenance, insurance, and the Liberty Pass support service. This is an annual subscription with monthly payments, not a monthly boat rental.

03 What types of boats are available on the Atlantic Coast?

Depending on the port, Liberty Pass offers different types of boats along the Atlantic Coast: motorboats, RIBs, sailboats, and multihulls. However, not all categories are available at every port.

04 Is it possible to sail year-round on the Atlantic Coast?

Yes. The vast majority of Liberty Pass boats are available year-round, except during the periods required for their annual maintenance.

The membership plan is specifically designed for recreational boaters who prefer to sail regularly rather than rent a boat on an occasional basis during the summer season. Outings are, of course, subject to weather conditions and sailing conditions.

05 How does the Liberty Pass subscription work?

Each boat can accommodate a maximum of 6 Liberty Pass subscribers. Outings are organized using a reservation token system that allows each member to reserve their upcoming time slots through the Liberty Pass app.

Once a trip has been completed, the corresponding token becomes available again and can be used to schedule a new trip. This system allows reservations to be distributed among the various subscribers while maintaining a high degree of flexibility in the boat’s use.
